Parents With an Anxious Child

Anxiety is mysterious. It has more faces than Johnny Depp. Take some time to learn about it. You don’t have to be an expert, but it helps to demystify it. The first thing I would suggest is read a couple books. I’m listing several that I think would be good summaries. There are a LOT of books available on anxiety. Some of them are excellent. I’ve read a lot of them but not even close to all of them. If you know of some good resources, please let me know.

For a general overview of anxiety in kids I would suggest:

Freeing Your Child from Anxiety: Powerful, Practical Solutions to Overcome Your Child’s Fears, Worries, and Phobias by Tamar Chansky

Helping Your Anxious Child: A Step-by-Step Guide for Parents by Ron Rapee, Ann Wignall, Susan Spence, Vanessa Cobham and Heidi Lynchan

Worried No More – Second Edition: Help and Hope for Anxious Children by Aureen Wagner

For information on exposure:

Face Your Fears: A Proven Plan to Beat Anxiety, Panic, Phobias, and Obsessions by David Tolin

For information on OCD:

Freedom from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder: A Personalized Recovery Program for Living with Uncertainty by Jonathan Grayson

What to Do When Your Brain Gets Stuck: A Kid’s Guide to Overcoming OCD by Dawn Huebner

What to do when your Child has Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: Strategies and Solutions by Aureen Wagner

For information on Panic:

Mastery of Your Anxiety and Panic: Workbook by David Barlow and Michelle Craske

Don’t Panic Third Edition: Taking Control of Anxiety Attacks by Reid Wilson

For information on Social Anxiety:

Overcoming Social Anxiety and Shyness: A Self-Help Guide Using Cognitive Behavioral Techniques by Gillian Butler (I haven’t read this one but I think it is probably a good explanation and guide.

I hope some of these resources help you and your child

Stay Strong,
